Popularized by Clay Christensen. JTBD shifts focus from demographics to the functional, emotional, and social progress a customer wants to make. Example: people don't buy a quarter-inch drill — they hire it to make a quarter-inch hole, which lets them hang the picture, which makes their living room look like the magazine.
